La Segunda Sala Penal de Peru on Wednesday ordered the release of former Peruvian presidential candidate and opposition party leader Keiko Fujimori, following her arrest last week in an ongoing money laundering investigation.
Keiko Fujimori is the daughter of former Peruvian dictator Alberto Fujimori. She is still under investigation over undeclared contributions made to her presidential campaign tied to the Brazilian construction company Odebrecht. Latin American politicians spanning from Brazil to Panama have been linked to contract buying schemes.
Keiko Fujimori’s arrest and release follow the stepping down of previous Peruvian president Pedro Pablo Kuczynski over allegations related to corruption charges with Odebrecht as well.
