The Supreme Court of the Maldives on Thursday overturned the prison term for the country’s former president Maumoon Abdul Gayoom.
The Maldives Criminal Court had convicted Gayoom in June of obstruction of justice for refusing to turn his cellphone over to police during an investigation into his involvement with a plan to overthrow the government.
He was sentenced him to 19 months in prison, along with several other top politicians.
The high court ruled that the former president’s trial in the lower courts was not conducted with the correct trial procedures.
