UN tribunal replaces judges in Mladic appeal

The International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals on Tuesday replaced [case materials] three out of five judges presiding over the appeal of convicted war criminal Ratko Mladic [JURIST news archive].

The original panel comprised Judges Theodor Meron, Carmel Agius, Liu Daqun, Prisca Matimba Nyambe and Seymour Panton. Judge Jean-Claude Antonetti granted the defendant’s request to replace the judges, citing bias against the defendant. The order replaces Meron, Agius and Liu. Judges Mparany Mamy Richard Rajohnson, Gberdao Gustave Kam and Elizabeth Ibanda-Nahamya will be replacing the former three judges.

Mladic was Commander of the Bosnian Serb Army (VRS) Main Staff between May 12, 1992, until November 8, 1996. Mladic was convicted in November 2017 for his role in committing crimes against humanity during the Yugoslavian conflict. Mladic appealed [JURIST report] his conviction in March.
