HRW urges US Senate to halt Kavanaugh nomination

Human Rights Watch (HRW) [advocacy website] released a statement [press release] on Wednesday calling for the US Senate to halt its confirmation of Brett Kavanaugh [official profile] to the US Supreme Court after a third accuser came forward, alleging Kavanaugh was present when she was sexually assaulted in 1982.

“With so much uncertainty about these allegations, the Senate should not be scheduling even a potential vote at this stage,” the press release read. HRW said it supports all of Kavanaugh’s accusers having the opportunity to be heard.

HRW previously condemned [analysis] Kavanaugh’s positions on issues such as abortion and LGBT rights. The organization also criticized the lack of transparency in the nomination process.

Kavanaugh’s first accuser, Christine Blasey Ford, will be testifying on Thursday. The Senate is scheduled to vote a day later.

On Monday Amnesty International called for [JURIST report] a postponement on the vote of Kavanaugh’s nomination until information about his alleged involvement with human rights violations after 9/11 is made public.

The Senate already postponed [JURIST report] the vote, which was scheduled for last week.
