UN rights expert warns against unjust sanctions for Iran

UN Special Rapporteur Idriss Jazairy [official profile] said [press release] Wednesday that sanctions against Iran must be just and not harmful to innocent citizens.

The sanctions [JURIST report] reimposed earlier this month by US President Donald Trump are “destroying the economy and currency of Iran, driving millions of people into poverty and making imported goods affordable,” stressed the UN expert.

Jazairy stated:

I appeal to the United States to demonstrate its commitment to allow agricultural commodities, food, medicine, and medical devices into Iran by taking real and concrete steps to ensure that banks, financial institutions and companies can quickly and freely be assured that relevant imports and payments are permitted.

The US withdrew from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) agreement [JURIST report] in May, which had been unanimously approved by the UN Security Council [official website]. This, Jazairy claims, makes the reimposition of sanctions illegitimate.

The report highlighted the UN Declaration on Principles of International Law Concerning Friendly Relations and Cooperation among States [text], which encourages states to use peaceful measures to resolve disputes rather than by coercion through economic and political means.
