A judicial commission probing corruption under former South African president Jacob Zuma began its public hearings Monday.
Zuma resigned last February and was charged with corruption [JURIST report] in March.
Zuma’s fall began with the State of Capture Report [text, PDF conducted by a public anti-graft body. The report triggered the creation of an independent commission, the Zondo Commission [BBC report], tasked with investigating the upper levels of the Zuma administration for corruption. Specifically, the former president stands accused of selling off cabinet positions.
The Zondo Commission does not have the ability to prosecute, but it can obtain evidence for future prosecutions. Former president Zuma’s term was set to expire in mid-2019.
