The former Prime Minister of Malaysia, Najib Razak, was arrested on Tuesday due to his alleged involvement in theft from a state-owned development company called 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) [BBC report]. Razak is accused of stealing $700 million dollars from the fund, and the United States Department of Justice [press release] alleges that a total of $4.5 billion has been misappropriated from the company since 2009.
Razak was an owner of 1MDB and is set to face charges that reportedly include [Al Jazeera report] money laundering and misappropriation of property.
The arrest and charges come after a raid [Al Jazeera report] on properties linked to the former PM in which $273 million worth of items and jewelry were seized and a special task force [JURIST report] was formed.
Razak is currently spending the night detained at the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission and will appear in court tomorrow morning.
