New York AG files suit against Trump Foundation

The New York attorney general filed [petition, PDF] a petition today against the Donald J. Trump Foundation and its directors Donald J. Trump, Donald J. Trump, Jr., Ivanka Trump, and Eric Trump.

The petition alleges [press release] “a pattern of persistent illegal conduct, occurring over more than a decade, that includes extensive unlawful political coordination with the Trump presidential campaign, repeated and willful self-dealing transactions to benefit Mr. Trump’s personal and business interests, and violations of basic legal obligations for non-profit foundations.”

Specifically, the petition alleges that President Trump used money from the Trump Foundation to pay for personal items and to support his campaign for presidency.

For relief, the attorney general is asking for several things. First, the attorney general is asking for the Trump Foundation to be dissolved, as well as restitution “up to double the amount of benefits improperly obtained through self-dealing transactions after July 1, 2014.” The attorney general is also asking that President Trump be banned from serving as a director or equivalent of any not-for-profit organization for the next ten years.
