Trump administration moves forward with proposed restriction on funding for abortion providers

The Trump administration announced [press release] its support on Friday to move forward with the proposed rule from the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) [official website] that would ban Planned Parenthood and similar organizations from receiving federal family planning funds that they currently receive through Title X [text, PDF].

The statement provides that,

This important proposal would ensure compliance with the program’s existing statutory prohibition on funding programs in which abortion is a method of family planning. The new proposed rule would not cut funds from the Title X program. Instead, it would ensure that taxpayers do not indirectly fund abortions.

According to the study [text, PDF] by the Government Accountability Office [official website], the federal government has paid abortion providers $26.5 billion in the past three years.

The National Family Planning & Reproductive Health Association and the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) [advocacy websites] filed suit earlier this month challenging the proposed cut to Title X funding.
