The Oregon House of Representatives on Thursday approved a bill [text] aimed to expand the state’s gun control laws.
House Bill 4145 seeks to amend existing provisions and add new ones to the state’s already existing gun control statutes. The bill seeks to prohibit individuals convicted for stalking from obtaining firearms. Violation of the new provision would incur a penalty of 364 days in jail, a $6,250 fine, or both.
The bill would also mandate greater state agency involvement with reporting and recording the status of past and current offenders. The bill would require the Department of State Police to report all available gun owner applicant records to the state Attorney General’s office as well as local law enforcement agencies. Reporting must be made within 24 hours.
Among the proposed amendments of the bill is the modification of “dealer” ( as in gun dealers) to explicitly read “gun dealers.”
The legislation will now go before the Oregon Senate.
