Supreme Court declines to hear Samsung appeal in Apple patent dispute

The US Supreme Court on Monday declined to hear [order list, PDF] Samsung’s appeal in a patent case against Apple over Smartphone features.

Samsung argued [cert. petition, PDF] that three of Apple’s patents covered trivial advances that were not eligible for legal protection.

Monday’s order lets stand an appeals court decision [JURIST report] reinstating a jury verdict awarding $120 million to Apple for infringing on numerous patents such as the slide to unlock feature and auto-correcting text.

This is one several [JURIST op-ed] cases involving [JURIST report] Apple and Samsung since 2011. Last month a US district court judge ordered a retrial [JURIST report] a to determine the amount Samsung owes Apple for infringing three iPhone 3Gs patents. The retrial date is set for May 2018.

38 Santee Sioux hanged by US for rebellion

On December 26, 1862, 38 Santee Sioux men were hanged in a mass execution for their roles in a rebellion against US authorities in Minnesota which left hundreds dead and made refugees of some 40,000 white settlers. Government annuities promised under a treaty with the Sioux had failed to arrive on schedule and credit for purchases was not advanced in the meantime, threatening the tribe with starvation. Louis XVI put on trial during French Revolution

On December 26, 1792, Romain de Sèze, a defense attorney for deposed King Louis XVI, presented a defense of his client. The former King was on trial before a French Revolutionary court on thirty-three charges, including treason and other crimes against the state. He was convicted on January 15, 1793 executed by guillotine on the following January 21.
