US President Donald Trump [official website] signed the Presidential Executive Order on Buy American and Hire American [text] on Tuesday. The order requires executive agencies to monitor and enforce Buy American Laws, which are defined as all laws that “require, or provide a preference for, the purchase or acquisition of goods, products, or materials produced in the United States, including iron, steel, and manufactured goods.” Agencies also have 150 days to develop policies ensuring that federal awards and purchases are used to maximize the use of American-made products. It also tasks certain agencies with suggesting reforms to the H-1B visa program, “to help ensure that H-1B visas are awarded to the most-skilled or highest-paid petition beneficiaries.”

This is the latest executive order signed by Trump since taking office in January. In the last month, some of Trump’s presidential executive orders have addressed issues such as energy regulations, drug addiction, trade, and internet regulations. Trump signed an executive order reforming the previous administration’s energy policies [JURIST report]. He also signed an order establishing a task force for combating drug addiction that will be led [JURIST report] by New Jersey Governor Chris Christie. The commission will recommend efforts to more effectively battle drug addiction. Earlier this month, Trump released an executive order instructing the Commerce Department and the US Trade Representative to study causes of the US trade deficit [JURIST report]. A few days later, he signed a bill officially repealing [JURIST report] internet privacy regulations set by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) during the end of former president Barrack Obama’s term.
