Zambia court blocks arrest of chief prosecutor on corruption charges

[JURIST] Zambian High Court [official website] Judge Mwila Chitabo on Thursday ordered a stay of the arrest warrant [orders, JPG] against chief prosecutor Mutembo Nchito after a lower court issued the warrant on claims of corruption. The High Court judge held that the lower court had no authority to hear the case and released the prosecutor until the High Court can review the case. A private citizen accused Nchito [Reuters report] of forgery and other crimes between 2008 and August 2013. This will be the first high profile case in Zambia since President Edgar Lungu, who vowed to end corruption, took office in 2015.

In 2013 Zambian authorities arrested [JURIST report] former president Rupiah Banda on allegations that he misappropriated over USD $11 million during his three-year tenure in office. In 2010 Zambia’s Supreme Court acquitted Regina Chiluba [JURIST report], the wife of former Zambian president Frederick Chiluba, of charges that she accepted stolen property during the years of her husband’s administration. Frederick Chiluba was acquitted [JURIST report] in 2009 of charges of stealing money from the country’s treasury while in office from 1991-2001.
