[JURIST] The chief prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC) [official website] Saturday called on citizens worldwide to "break the silence" and pressure their governments to help apprehend Sudanese war crimes suspects in Darfur [JURIST archive] for prosecution by the ICC. In an interview [CP article] with the Canadian Press, Luis Moreno-Ocampo [official profile] urged foreign governments to take a lead role in arresting the suspects [JURIST report] in order to help end conflict in the region. He repeated his demand [JURIST report] for the arrest of Minister of State Humanitarian Affairs Ahmed Muhammad Harun [JURIST report; Trial Watch profile], stating that "[t]here is no solution to Darfur if Harun is not arrested." Moreno-Ocampo has previously called on Sudan itself to arrest the war crimes suspects for ICC prosecution. Sudan has responded by saying that the ICC does not have the jurisdiction [JURIST report] to prosecute alleged war crimes in Darfur because Sudan has not ratified the ICC's Rome Statute [PDF text].
