German court sentences Iraqi for recruiting, funding insurgents

[JURIST] A German court sentenced Iraqi Lokman Amin Mohammed to seven years in prison Thursday for recruiting fighters and raising money to support the insurgency in Iraq. Prosecutors say Mohammed played a key role in the Western Europe branch [JURIST report] of insurgent group Ansar al-Islam [Wikipedia backgrounder], smuggling wounded Iraqi fighters into Europe for medical treatment. Mohammed is the first person to be convicted in Germany under a law passed after September 11, which makes participation in a foreign terrorist organization a criminal offense. Defense lawyers admitted Mohammed was committed to a "holy war" but asked for leniency arguing the attacks in Iraq were prompted by an "illegal" US occupation. Reuters has more.
