Report on Russian kidnappings, torture in terror war [Amnesty International]

Torture, "disappearances" and alleged unfair trials in Russian's North Caucasus, Amnesty International, September 30, 2005 [report claiming that Russia is utilizing its own "war on terror" to commit human rights abuses, alleging that between 3,000 and 5,000 kidnappings have taken place since 1999]. Excerpt:

What the Russian government describes as its "war on terror" in this region is being used as a pretext for violations that include "disappearances", torture, arbitrary detention and incommunicado detention in unacknowledged as well as official places of detention. There are ongoing reports of targeted violence against women by members of the security forces in Chechnya, in particular arbitrary detention, rape, and killing. Such violations are overwhelmingly committed with impunity, as very few perpetrators are ever identified and brought to justice.

On April 26, 1970, the Convention Establishing the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) went into force, creating WIPO. WIPO is a United Nations agency that works to promote intellectual property rights in the international community. Today, 184 nations have signed the convention.

US soldier arrested for killing John Wilkes Booth

On April 26, 1865, Sergeant Thomas P. Corbett was placed under technical arrest for killing John Wilkes Booth, the assassin of President Abraham Lincoln.

Charges against Corbett were dropped by Secretary of War Stanton, and Corbett received a share of the reward money for Booth, which amounted to $1,653.85. Learn more about Thomas P. Corbett.
