Criminal Victimization, 2004, US Department of Justice [DOJ], released September 25, 2005 [reporting that violent crimes in the US in 2004 were at their lowest levels since the DOJ began compiling statistics 32 years ago]. Excerpt:

Taken together, the 1-year (2003-04) and 2-year (2001-02 to 2003-04) change estimates indicate that crime rates remain stabilized at the lowest levels experienced since 1973.

Great Britain's first income tax introduced

On January 9, 1799, British Prime Minister William Pitt introduced Great Britain's first income tax. The tax was announced the previous December as a means of raising money for war against Napoleon. Pitt's successor, Henry Addington, repealed the tax when hostilities subsided in 1802. Addington then reinstated the tax during the following year when fighting was renewed.
