[JURIST] Public Advocate of the United States [advocacy website], a right-wing group based in Virginia, announced [press release] Wednesday that they would become the first conservative group to oppose the nomination of John Roberts [JURIST news archive] to the US Supreme Court. The group is protesting his behind-the-scenes work [JURIST report] on Romer v. Evans [opinion], a 1996 case where the Supreme Court overturned a Colorado constitutional provision as discriminatory towards homosexuals. The protest comes despite no other evidence of Roberts' position on gay rights, and the understanding that positions advocated by lawyers in court are not necessarily indicative of their own personal beliefs or legal interpretations.
