[JURIST] A Turkish court sentenced Metin Kaplan [BBC profile] Monday to life imprisonment for plotting to kill members of the country's ruling elite by flying a plane into the mausoleum of Kemal Ataturk, the founder of the modern Turkish republic. Kaplan's lawyer did not agree with the ruling, stating "we believe such a decision was reached beforehand" and that there will be an appeal. The so-called "Caliph of Cologne" was extradited from Germany to face charges in Turkey [JURIST report] in 2004 after serving a four-year prison term in Germany for ordering the murder of a rival religious leader.
