[JURIST] The Leadership Conference on Civil Rights [advocacy site] has announced plans to air TV commercials opposing the confirmation of African-American California state judge Janice Rogers Brown [US DOJ OLP profile] to the US Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia. The commercials will air in Rhode Island, Nebraska, and Maine, whose US senators the group hopes to influence. Brown was one of three judges recently guaranteed a vote in the Senate as part of a compromise on judicial filibusters. The LCCR opposes Brown's confirmation [advocacy statement] because it believes that while her supporters make much of the fact that she is black, they consider her "hostile" to civil rights, affirmative action, and anti-discrimination laws.
