[JURIST] Talks directed towards the framing of a new constitution for the war-torn country of Sudan began Saturday in Khartoum with the official opening of the National Commission for the Reform of the Constitution, formed last week [JURIST report]. The Commission, created pursuant to a January peace deal [documents in English] between the Sudanese government and southern rebels belonging to the Sudan People's Liberation Army is charged with constructing a draft of an interim constitution good for six years of transitional rule which can be approved before July 9 by the existing Sudanese parliament and the Sudan People's Liberation Movement [official website], the SPLA's political arm.
