[JURIST] Juan Guzman, [profile] the Chilean judge best known for indicting military strongman and former dictator General Augusto Pinochet [profile], has announced his retirement. Guzman indicted Pinochet twice, first in a case relating to the Caravan of Death [BBC backgrounder] which executed 70 political prisoners, and second in a case relating to Operation Condor [Wikipedia backgrounder], a plan to hunt and kill Chilean left-wing activists. Guzman never secured a conviction due to Pinochet's health, but the general has been under increasing legal pressure.
