Suliman Giddo [President and CEO, Darfur Peace & Development]: "The tragic war and atrocities committed against the defenseless civilians in Darfur have been escalating since the partial agreement (Darfur Peace Agreement) was signed in May 2006. The downside of the Darfur Peace Agreement, besides its mass rejection by Darfurians, is that the agreement gave the government of Sudan one more chance to continue and complete its crimes, supported by its proxy – Jengaweed.
The government of Sudan has provided the UN office with its military plan for the region, stating that they have sent 12,000 more Sudanese government troops to Darfur. The question is who has been committing these crimes for the last three years? It is this very government which has orchestrated and committed these crimes, continuing them even today. Dare we wait for the perpetrator to protect its victims? UN troops must be deployed immediately for the sake of Darfurians' lives."
