Lula was jailed earlier this month after losing an appeal [JURIST report] to the Supreme Court of Brazil. This failed appeal is year another setback for Lula and his supporters who hope to see him run for president in the elections later this year in October.

There is a “clean slate” law in Brazil that usually prohibits someone with a conviction that was upheld on appeal from running for office for eight years. Nevertheless, Lula vows to continue running and he currently leads in the polls. The denied appeal can further be appealed to Brazil’s twohighest courts, the Supreme Court of Justice and the Federal Supreme Court. Lula must be cleared of charges prior to August 15th, the filing deadline in order to be able to run.
