Legislators object to special master appointment in North Carolina redistricting case

North Carolina state legislators on Monday objected [text, PDF] to the appointment of a special master by a three judge panel in the US District Court for the Middle District of North Carolina [official website]. Last week, the panel had ordered [JURIST report] the appointment of a special master to evaluate nine redrawn legislative districts of the 28 that were struck down [JURIST report] as unconstitutional by the US Supreme Court in June.

US soldier arrested for killing John Wilkes Booth

On April 26, 1865, Sergeant Thomas P. Corbett was placed under technical arrest for killing John Wilkes Booth, the assassin of President Abraham Lincoln.
