Two men charged in US in Gambia coup attempt

[JURIST] Two men have been charged [complaint, PDF; press release] in the US with conspiring to help overthrow the government of The Gambia. According to the complaint, Cherno Njie and Papa Faal traveled last month from the US to The Gambia to participate in a coup attempt while Gambian President Yahya Jammeh [BBC profile] was away. The men later returned to the US. They are in custody and expected to make court appearances Monday in federal court in Baltimore and Minneapolis.

On December 30 gunfire erupted [BBC report] near the presidential palace in Banjul, leaving four killed. Later that week UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon [official website] expressed [JURIST report] “principled condemnation” of the attempted coup, urging respect for the rule of law.
