[JURIST] A military jury on Monday recommended issuing a reprimand rather than a prison sentence for Army Chief Warrant Officer Lewis Welshofer Jr. in connection with the interrogation death of an Iraqi general. Welshofer was convicted [JURIST report] of negligent homicide and negligent dereliction of duty for the incident by the six-officer jury at Fort Carson [official website], avoiding a potential life sentence for the original murder charge sought by prosecutors. Under the reprimand, Welshofer faces a forfeiture of $6,000 in salary and a 60-day barracks restriction. He was convicted for forcing Iraqi Maj. Gen. Abed Hamed Mowhoush headfirst into a sleeping bag and jumping on his chest. Mowhoush was killed while in US custody in 2003, but defense attorneys argued that his death was due to a heart condition.
