California legislature votes to ban giving state-funded Viagra to sex offenders

[JURIST] California's legislature passed a bill Monday that would prevent convicted sex offenders from obtaining state-funded erectile dysfunction (ED) drugs, such as Viagra and Levitra. The vote on AB 522 [PDF text; bill summary] follows a May directive issued by Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger [press release] that state agencies cease providing known sex offenders with ED drugs until the necessary legislation could be passed. A New York state audit released that month revealed that almost 200 sex offenders in New York had been given ED drugs through state programs; a subsequent investigation in California found that between April 2004 and May 2005, 137 sex offenders had been received Viagra through the state's Medi-Cal system.
