Lynndie England defense only allowed one witness in Abu Ghraib abuse hearing
Jeannie Shawl on August 31, 2004 9:05 AM ET

Military judge Col. Denise Arn allowed Pfc. Lynndie England to call only one witness Monday in her Article 32 hearing at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, to decide whether she should face court-martial in the Abu Ghraib prisoner abuse scandal. England faces charges which include conspiring to maltreat Iraqi prisoners, assaulting prisoners, committing acts prejudicial to good order and committing an indecent act. Despite defense requests to call high-ranking witnesses, including Vice President Dick Cheney and Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld, in order to show that orders to mistreat prisoners could be traced to Washington, England was only allowed to call Kenneth Davis, a military police sergeant. In his testimony, Davis said that military intelligence agents had abused prisoners and ordered Spc. Charles Graner, who has also been implicated in the abuse scandal, to do the same. Tuesday's North Carolina News & Observer has more. JURIST's Paper Chase has background on England's hearing.
