Rachel Alexander [editor, Intellectual Conservativism]: "As Scott J. Bloch, head of the U.S. Office of Special Counsel, continues to complain that the Department of Justice's investigation is delaying his investigation of the nine U.S. attorney firings, the question arises, why are two investigations needed? Although there is concern that the Department of Justice is technically investigating itself, don't forget that there have already been consequences - Alberto Gonzales has resigned. The validity of an investigation is in dispute, since those on the right think Gonzales did nothing wrong and had a right to fire the attorneys for almost any reason. Those on the left are the ones who called for an investigation, evidence this could be nothing more than a political witch hunt. There is no consensus that an investigation is necessary.

Bloch's credibility as a prosecutor is questionable. His administration of the Office of Special Counsel reveals a temperamental style of going after perceived improper behavior by government employees, quick to make scathing accusations. Ironically, Bloch has been accused himself of stonewalling investigations into his own office by refusing to turn over or deleting computer files on his computer, retaliating against whistleblowers with investigations, and improperly dismissing other requests for whistleblower investigations. Congress just added $1.1 million more in funding for Bloch to investigate alleged illegal political activity by the Bush administration. It seems a bit wasteful to have two investigations going on the taxpayer dole. Bloch's blustering presents a good opportunity to revisit the decision to have his office double up on this investigation."
