Supreme Court's Image Declines as Nomination Battle Looms, Pew Research Center, June 16, 2005 [poll report showing a reduction in favorable views of the Supreme Court on both sides of the political spectrum]. Excerpt:

With an aging Supreme Court possibly facing major changes, the court's public image has eroded significantly. Currently, 57% of Americans have a favorable opinion of the Supreme Court, with 30% expressing an unfavorable view. In the past, favorable views of the court typically surpassed 70%; even in January 2001, shortly after the Supreme Court's ruling deciding the contentious presidential election, 68% expressed a positive opinion of the court.

US spy Nathan Hale executed in New York

US spy Nathan Hale was executed on September 22, 1776 after he was captured by British forces during the American Revolutionary War. Hale went to British-occupied New York City to gather intelligence on military operations. He was captured and executed within a month, purportedly declaring "I only regret that I have but one life to lose for my country" before his death at the age of 21.
